Singles

The top three remains unchanged this week - Eminem and Rihanna hold the top spot for the second week with Love The Way You Lie. In their second week in the chart both Dynamite and Dirty Picture by Taio Cruz have moved up the chart sitting at No.14 and No.18 respectively. Mark Ronson has also had a second week surge with Bang Bang Bang up to No.16 from No.24. Melbourne’s Michael Paynter enters the top 50 for the first time with Love The Fall at No.33.

 

I HATE MONDAYS - Newton Faulkner
No.8

The latest single from Brit singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner, comes from the popular Hamish & Andy radio show. I Hate Mondays was written by show regular (and Andy’s ex-housemate) Horgs. Faulkner put the finishing touches on the track and this release is the result. It’s his second-highest charting track after Dream Catch Me (No.5 May ’08).

 

DJ GOT US FALLIN' IN LOVE - Usher Feat. Pitbull
No.10
Following the smash success of OMG (No.1 May ’10), Usher breaks into the top ten again with a new single. DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love comes from the deluxe edition of the album Raymond V Raymond (No.2 May ’10). It features Pitbull making a guest appearance. It is the third track in this week’s chart to feature Pitbull. He also makes appearances on Enrique IglesiasI Like It and Alexandra Burke’s All Night Long.

 

WHAT IT - Jason Derulo
No.47
The fourth track to hit the chart from Jason Derulo’s self-titled debut album (No.4 Mar. ’10). The R&B star has previously entered the charts with Whatcha Say (No.5 Jan. ’10), In My Head (No.1 Feb. ’10) and Ridin’ Solo (No.4 June ’10). What If has also hit the charts in the UK and Ireland. Derulo heads to Australia for an arena tour in November.

 

RIDE (BEI MAEJOR REMIX) - Ciara Feat. Andre 3000, Ludacris & Bei Maejor

No.75

Ride is the first single to be released from Ciara’s new album, Basic Instinct. This version is the official remix of the track. In addition to featuring Ludacris (who appears on the original), this version also features Outkast’s Andre 3000 and producer Bei Maejor. The singer sees the addition of Andre 3000 as quite a coup as he is quite selective of the projects he works on. Ciara’s best performing single was 1, 2 Step (No.2 Apr. ’05).

 

THIS AFTERNOON - Nickelback
No.78

The latest single from Nickelback comes from their album Dark Horse (No.3 Nov. ’08). It’s the final song on the album and the fifth song to chart from the album. Others to chart include If Today Was Your Last Day (No.26 Jun. ’09), I’d Come For You (No.22 Apr. ’09) and Gotta Be Somebody (No.14 Nov. ‘08).

 

CLOSER TO THE EDGE - 30 Seconds To Mars
No.85
With their national tour kicking off over the weekend in Perth, another track from 30 Seconds To Mars’ album This Is War (No.36 Dec. ’09) enters the chart. Closer To The Edge is the second track from the album to chart after Kings And Queens (No.67 Oct. ’09). The band has shows in Sydney and Melbourne later in the week to complete the tour.

Albums

Eminem’s Recovery holds off Kylie’s Aphrodite for the top spot again this week. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack has moved back up to No.3 from No.6. Justin Bieber has re-entered the top five with My Worlds. On the back of their forthcoming tour, Florence + The Machine re-enter the top ten with Lungs. New editions of their respective albums have moved Usher and Ke$ha up the charts, they are now positioned at No.13 and No.20 respectively. With their debut Australian tour announced during the week, Gorillaz have re-entered the chart with their latest, Plastic Beach in a No.95.

 

BASEMENT BIRDS - Basement Birds
No.12

An all-aussie super group brings us this week’s highest new entry. Basement Birds is made up of singer-songwriters Josh Pyke and Steve Parkin, Eskimo Joe’s Kav Temperley and Jebediah’s Kevin Mitchell (aka solo artist Bob Evans). The album was recorded at Temperley’s home studio in Perth. It features an appearance by Julia Stone on the track Bus Stop. The band’s sound is informed by a mutual love of groups such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Traveling Wilburys and Wilco. Basement Birds head off on a national tour in August.

 

SYMPHONICITIES - Sting
No.40
After hitting the charts late last year with If On A Winter’s Night… (No.58 Nov. ’09), Sting returns with another album of a somewhat different flavour. Symphonicites sees the ex-Police singer reinterpreting some of his best known material with the help of the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Included in the set are Roxanne, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Englishman In New York and Next To You. The album’s title is a play on the title of the final Police album, Synchronicity.

 

ALIVE - Ed Kowalczyk

Former Live lead singer Ed Kowalczyk makes his solo debut with the album Alive. The album comes just over a year since Live played their final show before going on hiatus. Since then, the hiatus seems to have become a permanent split with Kowalczyk going solo and the other members forming The Gracious Few. Alive features tracks written by Kowalczyk on an acoustic guitar and features lyrics with heavy religious and spiritual imagery. Live had three No.1 albums: Throwing Copper (No.1 Aug. ’95), The Distance To Here (No.1 Oct. ’99) and V (No.1 Sep. ’01).

 

DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL - Dangermouse & Sparklehorse
No.94

There seems to be no rest for Dangermouse. After charting with his new band, Broken Bells (No.20 Mar. ’10), the producer and multi-instrumentalist, also known as Brian Burton, has collaborated with Sparklehorse and film director David Lynch for this new project. Dark Night Of the Soul features a host of guest vocalists including Iggy Pop, The Shins’ James Mercer, Black Francis, The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle and Suzanne Vega. The album was completed before Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous passed away on March 6, 2010.

 

ALIVE TILL I'M DEAD - Professor Green

This is the debut album from East London rapper, Professor Green. Alive Till I’m Dead features the current single Just Be Good To Green (No.49 July ’10), as well as the track I Need You Tonight, which samples the 1987 INXS hit Need You Tonight. Green, born Stephen Manderson, started rapping at age 18. He was stabbed in the neck in mid-2008. He now has a tattoo on his neck that reads ‘lucky’.

 

DAN KELLY'S DREAM - Dan Kelly
No.100

ARIA Award-nominated singer-songwriter, Dan Kelly hits the charts with his debut solo album. Dan Kelly’s Dream is Kelly’s first album since the split of his group Dan Kelly & The Alpha Males in 2007. The album features the radio favourites, Bindi Irwin Apocalypse Jam and Hold On (I’m Coming On). Kelly and his new band will be making appearances nationally in the coming months.
